Rehabilitation is a key component to restore function to reduce pain and help prevent future injury. The goal of rehab is to restore physical strength, cognition, and mobility for maximized results. When our lives are interrupted by car accidents, slips and falls, chronic pain, or any other trauma, the best approach is chiropractic rehab.

The first step for effective rehab is the proper alignment of the spine. During traumas, the spine will often undergo stress that results in misalignments. These misalignments cause stress on the nervous system and are subluxations.

Subluxations will cause two main obstacles to fast and long-term rehabilitation. The first obstacle is the musculoskeletal component. When the spine is not in the proper alignment, this will produce compensations in the muscles and ligaments. Subluxations cause misbalance in the muscles which results in knots and “trigger points.” When the muscles are constantly straining or stretching, this will affect the proper movement of your body.

The second obstacle is the neurological component. The Central Nervous System controls the nerves, the nerves control the muscles, and the muscles control motion. When your body is under neurological stress, this will hinder and slow down the results that will get you back to doing the things that you love!

The proper alignment of the body is vital for optimal performance. Chiropractic is a specialty that focuses on the spine and the nervous system. At Abundant Life Chiropractic, we use a combination of unique approaches including the chiropractic adjustment, specific exercises and stretches, and in-house rehabilitation.

Here are some approaches that you can try for acute conditions:

Ice/heat – although there is yet much controversy concerning whether ice or heat is the preferred method of treating acute injuries, both ice and heat have been known to help people with pain. If you have been in an automobile collision or have been injured, getting some ice or heat will help temporarily with the pain. Heat will help bring bloodflow into the muscles surrounding the area with pain. On the other hand, cold will be beneficial by bringing down inflammation to promote healing.

Another effective approach in an acute situation is gentle stretching. During a trauma, the muscles tense up to protect the area and prevent further injury. If proper motion is not restored, almost immediately scar tissue will start to form in the muscles. This scar tissue will affect proper motion in that area, and cause the rest of the body to start compensating. This will affect you on many different level such as gait, mobility, and functionality. Light stretching in the region of the trauma will help prevent scar tissue formation and help you continue moving!

Finally, if the pain gets to the point that it is unbearable, pain-relieving medication may be a good temporary fix. This should be a short-term solution, due to the fact that pain-relieving medication has many side effects, including severe liver damage. Remember to follow the instructions on the bottle, and not take more pills than instructed.

A large part of why TJ has been a patient at our clinic is injury prevention. Prevention is always better than recovering from an injury. At Abundant Life Chiropractic, we believe that the best type of healthcare is the preventative one. These are the principles that we teach our patients.
