Arguably one of the most common diseases around the world, migraines and headaches are very multi-factorial in their causative nature. They also present themselves with a wide array of symptoms ranging from pain in the head to blurred vision and even may result dizziness and nausea.

Symptoms of Migraines or Headaches include:

  • Pain originating at the base of the skull
  • Pain traveling through the temple region and the forehead
  • Vice-like pain on the side of the head
  • Stabbing pain through the eyes
  • Facial nerve pain
  • Blurred Vision
  • Nausea
  • Light and sound sensitivities

What Causes Migraines

Migraines are considered multi-factorial in nature, in that they can come from food, chemicals, phycological stressors, and physical stressors on the nervous system. Even though approximately 90% of migraines come from physical stressors on the nervous system, it is still important to consider the other 10%. Physical stressors consist of automobile injuries, sports injuries, whiplash, concussions, hard falls, and any repetitive micro trauma caused by poor sedentary posture.

Physical stressors will commonly cause damage to the spinal vertebra and nerves (specifically the nerves in the upper most neck). These nerves, not only cause neck tension, and problems turning the head left and right, but are also the same nerves that feed into our skull and head. When these nerves become irritated they will quickly surface with symptoms of migraines.

Thanks to our fast-paced American lifestyles, our day to day activities will commonly stress the upper neck structures, spinal vertebra, and cause irritation on these nerves.   Activities ranging from automobile accidents, working extended hours at a desk or in a sedative position, and sports injuries put a plethora of stress onto the upper neck and spinal column.

Inappropriately treated concussions and whiplashes are the most common source of long term migraine headache symptoms. Prior to a concussion or whiplash injury, a large amount of force must go through the upper neck ligaments allowing them to shear, tear and bend. In turn, this allows the upper neck vertebra to slosh around and impinge the nerves that feed into the neck, resulting in migraines. If you have had a recent concussion or whiplash injury it is very important to have a diagnostic examination done by an upper cervical practitioner.

Different Types of Migraines Headaches

  • 1. Tension Headaches: Tension headaches are the most common headache of the millennium. Commonly caused by an abundance of stress throughout our days, tension headaches result in a vice-like pain that goes from one side of the temples to the other. These headaches are a chiropractor’s dream, as they generally are a pretty easy fix without a bunch of therapy or work.
  • 2. Migraine Headaches: Migraine headaches always branch from previous stressors and injuries put on the body. These headaches are generally very consistent in their appearance and stem from injuries dating 5, 10 and even 20 years back. When a person presents with migraine headaches, one of two things is taking place. One, the body is auto-toxic (from chemicals and poor nutrition), and the migraine is surfacing as a way of screaming at you to make a change. Or two, the most common source of migraine headaches (accounting for over 90% of migraines), is that the migraines are stemming from previous physical injuries that caused damage to the upper neck muscles and ligaments. The ligaments of the upper neck are meant to serve as structural support platforms. When these ligaments get damaged it will cause direct stress and irritation onto the cranial nerves that feed back into the head every time you turn left, right, or side to side, resulting in migraines/headaches. These are very treatable, but it is important that you see an upper cervical specialist for maximum results.
  • 3. Cluster Headaches: Cluster headaches are potentially the least enjoyable headache to deal with. Cluster headaches present themselves with sharp, stabbing, icepick like pain, traveling from the base of the skull through the eyes. If you are suffering with similar symptoms you need to call the office right away for a detailed examination (952) 300.8338. These headaches come from upper cervical damage that was severe enough to where the cranial nerves are being directly impinged when moving the head.
