What is peripheral neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy refers to various conditions that affect and damage the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system refers to the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. The types of nerves that can be affected are your motor nerves, sensory nerves, and autonomic nerves. Damage to these nerves can be caused by over 100 different causes. These causes include things like chemotherapy, diabetes, direct trauma, autoimmune disorders, and kidney and liver disorders just to name a few.

Peripheral neuropathy and its effects.

Peripheral neuropathy can manifest itself in many ways. Depending on what area(s) of the body (i.e. hands, feet, etc.) are affected dictate the signs and symptoms experienced. If the motor nerves are affected, we can expect to see things such as muscle weakness, cramps, muscle atrophy (muscle shrinking), twitching, and even loss of function. When the large sensory fibers of our sensory nerves are damaged, we can expect to see issues with the ability to touch and feel things. We can also see issues with our ability to sense the position of our hands/feet in space which can create difficulties in coordinating complex movements such as walking, going upstairs, maintaining balance, and buttoning buttons. If the small fibers of the sensory nerves are affected, then our ability to feel pain and temperature will be altered. This can lead to both heightened or diminished sensations of pain and temperature. Things that typically do not cause pain, like walking or putting on socks, can end up causing excruciating pain.
